A glimpse into the application process...

Many of you know that a big part of my job is to read applications for students wanting to come to PLNU. I only read applications of first time freshman and although I read hundreds over an application season, I'm never bored with these. Some things these kids come up with and put on their applications is mind boggling to me. Here's some snapshots and thoughts I think while reading theses.(My thoughts are in italic red)

Mother's Occupation: Family Manager
Employer: Self
Wow! I've seen "homemaker", "mom", "housewife"... but family manager? Now that's a new one! Gotta wonder if mom actually filled out the application and not the kid...

Name: Alisabeth
Now why do you have to go and take a normal name and make it confusing for me when I go to call your kid? And if you do, please teach your kid not to be such a jerk about me pronouncing it wrong...

Father's Occupation: Director of Security
Employer: Hilton Htoels
I wonder if this is the crappy/cheap version of my beloved Hilton Hotels? Better question, do they give better points? It's alllll about the Hilton points!

 E-mail Address: G_MONEY78930@_____.com
I just laugh when I see email addresses like this or ones with XXX or BABY in them. What are they thinking when they type this into college applications? Emails are FREE these days... create a professional one before using it on college apps... please.

First line in the response to our essay: "I completely agree with Point Loma’s agreement and I am not just saying that."
Good to know you're not just saying that!

Third choice of school: Westmony
Must be that new up and coming boutique school I've never heard of...

I'm sure I'll have more tomorrow!

Until next time...

If only...

I wish I was one of those people that could just let things go and sit there while things are done that you don't necessarily agree with. I envy those types of people. I try to pick my battles and it's been something I've been working on and having to learn recently is that even though there is clearly a better way to do it, people with titles will pull rank and make you do it their way. Regardless of reason or effectiveness (or lack thereof).

It reminds me of my high school math class when there are multiple ways to solve the square or whatever and I did it the way that made sense to me but my teacher didn't like that way and gave me a zero on that part of the exam because she wanted to put me in a box and make me do something a way that didn't make sense to me.

Welcome to my life right now... not a fan.

I'm getting restless. No wait, I am restless. I need change. I need Christmas break. Now.

blahhhh

Until next time...

Wait what college do I work for?

Word of advice to those who are asked to write a letter of recommendation for someone. Make sure you know how to spell the company/college/program's name before you submit it.

I would be a millionaire if I had a dollar for every recommendation I read that was for "PNLU" or "PLU" rather than "PLNU".

Come on people... I mean "Point Nazarene Loma University" just doesn't even make sense!

Until next time...

I just had to write a bio....

In one of my classes we have to have "author profiles" as part of the business plan and so we had to write our professional, one paragraph bio... mine has a lot of PLNU in it. I don't like the way it looks...
"Noelle Seybert, 25, graduated with a BA in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Public Relations from Point Loma Nazarene University in December of 2008. She currently works as the social media manager and admissions recruiter for 25 California counties for the Undergraduate Admissions office at Point Loma Nazarene University. Prior to taking the job at PLNU in October of 2009, Noelle worked as the Advertising and Marketing Coordinator for Experts Exchange in San Luis Obispo California for just under one year. Noelle hopes to one day work in the corporate recruiting world or work as a brand manager using social media to expand awareness of products and services a company offers. She is expected to graduate with her MBA from Point Loma Nazarene University in May of 2012"
Time to start looking for my PhD program far away from PLNU or another master's degree!!

Until next time...
