Advice to mom's everywhere...

Ever since I moved home, my mom has commented on how I don't pick up after myself (it's really not THAT bad) and how I used to complain about how messy my roommates at Point Loma were and how the kitchen never seemed to be clean... etc. Typical roommate annoyances right?

Well I thought the reason for the lack of cleanliness and care about the communal spaces in the apartment was because the girls had never lived outside the parental nest before. Though this may be true, I have figured out why I never do the dishes at home and how come when I'm somewhere it's messy, the filth bothers me. Both Ryan's mom and my mom don't believe us that we know how to do dishes and keep a space clean... quite untrue!

I came to this conclusion while visiting Ryan in Isla Vista. For those who haven't read previous blogs about his roommates, he lives in an apartment with three other guys. I'm not a huge fan of the roommates, but that's a different story...

Every morning, Ryan and I walk downstairs to the site of a tornado or ground zero of an exploded bomb. Sticky shot glasses everywhere and remnants of all sorts of alcohol on the table that missed the shot glass when being poured. That and bowls of unidentified food from the midnight munchies piled into the sink. I could go on....Anyways... so Ryan and I have this morning routine of cleaning the dishes, putting them away and disinfecting the countertops. Then the trash gets taken out while I start breakfast.
Mom's reading this will be like YEAH RIGHT! However, I tell no lie!! It truly happens!

So my advice for moms... What happens when there are dishes piling up at the sink at home and the dishwasher is full of clean dishes? I'll usually empty the dishwasher and load it because it's driving me crazy. Why don't I do this always? Well, simply because I know my mom (or dad) will do it. Yet, if it's left long enough, I do it. However, with roommates of any kind, I know the others won't do it, so I just suck it up and do it or it won't get done.

In short, moms, don't baby your kids. It will make happier roommates of your kids in the future.

Until next time...

  1. Agreed! I once had a roommate whose mother would come and clean up after her on the weekends. Like actually clean her room and if there were dishes in the sink she would do them. In COLLEGE.
